ScoopDuck Eval: Aydin Breland
Well the Ducks scored big moments ago on the recruiting trail. If you’re reading this you probably already know Mater Dei (Calif.) defensive lineman Aydin Breland just committed to Oregon. A massive win for Dan Lanning on the recruiting trail.
Breland is one of the top defensive linemen in the country and an elite player in the Western footprint. Lanning’s emphasis on recruiting the line of scrimmage continues to show in this class.
For more on why Breland is such a big pickup, check out our eval from my guy QB11.

If long defensive tackles with freaky explosive power are your thing, you’ve come to the right place. Since Dan Lanning assembled his staff and got to work on the recruiting trail there has been a clear emphasis on reshaping the Defensive line room. Step one was getting the right body types which meant getting longer and bigger frames to populate across the board. Step 2, was to get that rare body type with explosive athletes that have never been in abundance west of Texas.
Not only have they accomplished a vision that has never been seen for the Oregon DL/Edge rooms but they’ve done it in 2 years. Getting a prospect that caliber of Breland moves the needle substantially and when you start to think of paring him with the guys from last year as well as a player like Elijah Rushing you see the vision becoming more and more clear.
Explosiveness is typically measured in lower body strength and quickness but in the case of Breland that only covers half of the story. Breland has rare upper body explosive power through his hands with true knock back ability. In combination with his elite first step quickness, body control, and change of direction you get a truly dominant prospect. Combining these elite athletic traits with his 6’5, 290 pound lean and well developed frame creates the foundational traits for a IDL prospect unlike anything we’ve had at Oregon save the Armstead/Buckner combination. Breland is also much more twitchy than either of those players.
From a skill development standpoint Breland is much more developed than most although there is still a lot of room for development. At this stage he’s just so physically dominant, I’m not sure any more advanced technical development would actually show up on highschool tape. Mater Dei as a program does a better job than almost anyone of settings strong fundamental foundation for their players.
Projecting long term, breland has limitless talent, I anticipate he will be a truly dominant interior player that plays from the word go at Oregon. His length and explosive profile is such a rare combination out west. This is the type of prospect that usually grows up in another portion of the country and has so many options close to home we never have a chance. That’s changing under Lanning but securing the gold in your own back yard is a massive step in the right direction.
This is a really massive pickup both literally and figuratively that serves as a landmark as Oregon builds the best defensive front it’s ever had.
Go Ducks & F the Huskies!
