Grading the Florida Gators in a loss against No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators came up short in a measuring stick game against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs. Florida punched first but couldn’t withstand the counterattack and twice aided Georgia’s scoring efforts with a fumble and a blocked punt.

Overall, this game played out the way it should have and was always going to.

All week Billy Napier told his team that their best was good enough. That, if Florida played clean football, they could win. That’s what a coach should tell his players and it’s what they need to believe. Napier’s playcalling shows he knew that may have not been the case.

The fourth and short call shows that.

It’s a really cool play design. Florida needs a little less than a yard. Personally, I would like to see teams line up under center with extra offensive linemen and go full Philadelphia Eagles and shove the quarterback. Florida’s play, direct snapping the ball to Trevor Etienne isn’t a bad call. Etienne has the option to run or pass. His receiver, Ricky Pearsall, came across the formation in motion but is covered. Georgia Smael Mondon made a great tackle in space.

“Ultimately, at that point in the game, we felt it was going to be a point total that we needed to get to win the game,” Napier said after the game. “Felt we had a good play. I think we’re close there.”

I agree with Napier’s statement there. Florida probably had to go for it. The defense was in the beginning stages of showing it wouldn’t be able to curtail Georgia’s offensive efforts. Could the Gators have run the ball? Yes. Would that have had a higher likelihood of being a successful play? Probably. It shows a belief that Georgia’s defensive line, when selling out to stop a run up the middle, would win that battle against Florida’s offensive line.

It was a risk but Florida needed to take risks if they were going to beat Georgia.
