Andrel Anthony leaves Red River Rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas with injury

Oklahoma WR Andrel Anthony

Oklahoma had plenty of reasons to be excited through more than two quarters against Texas in the Red River Rivalry. But Sooners fans saw one of their top weapons leave with an injury in the third quarter when Andrel Anthony went down.

Anthony hit the turf after a Dillon Gabriel scramble on third down and was helped toward the locker room. He’s a key piece of the Oklahoma offense this year, leading the Sooners with 387 receiving yards coming in to go with a touchdown reception through five games.

Prior to his departure, Andrel Anthony had five receptions for 42 yards to help Oklahoma get out to a 27-20 lead over Texas in the third quarter. The Sooners and Longhorns traded blows in the early going as part of a crazy start, but OU got some separation to eventually take a 27-17 lead after halftime.

A Texas field goal by Bert Auburn made it a one-score game, and that remained the case entering the final 15 minutes.

Oklahoma then got an important stop to start the fourth quarter when Texas couldn’t get into the end zone on four straight plays from the 1-yard line. Xavier Worthy came close on the fourth-down play, but was ultimately ruled down before breaking the plane.

Brent Venables: Oklahoma needs to ’embrace the chaos’ in the second half vs. Texas

As Oklahoma headed to the halftime locker room, Brent Venables noted the chaotic nature of the first half. He wanted his players to embrace it, pointing out anything can happen the rest of the way.

“Embrace the chaos,” Venables told sideline reporter Holly Rowe on the ABC broadcast. “We talked about that a lot. No pressure is a privilege. Chaos is what this game is all about, always has been …

“Gave up a couple of drives here and in the second quarter, we thought they got some momentum back. But a really great job there. You’d love to convert and get that touchdown (at the end of the half. Now,) we get the ball back.”

Going into the break, Dillon Gabriel was eight-of-11 passing for 163 yards, as well as 40 yards on the ground off seven carries and managed to score a touchdown. Tawee Walker had eight carries for just 15 yards but scored the other touchdown for the Sooners.

On the flip side, Quinn Ewers was 11-of-15 passing for 121 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
