Miami commits, Hurricanes’ recruiting ranking climbs in latest On3 Industry Rankings update
Miami started the week with the No. 18 2024 recruiting class nationally, No. 3 class in the ACC and one top-60 commit in this year’s class, but after the latest On3 Industry Rankings update the Hurricanes have climbed a little higher.
Miami now holds the No. 15 class nationally, the No. 2 class in the ACC and has five top-70 pledges in 2024, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, an unevenly-weighted ranking system that weighs the four primary recruiting services based on past performance data, overall scouting and recruiting coverage investment. For football, the Industry Ranking algorithm is weighted as follows: On3 (35%), 247Sports (35%), Rivals.com (20%) and ESPN (10%).
The Industry Ranking update comes as the four primary recruiting services continue their respective in-season rankings updates, which includes On3.
Miami now sits ahead of Clemson in the 2024 Industry Ranking Football Team Recruiting Rankings but still sits nine spots behind Florida State at No. 6, who currently holds the top recruiting ranking in the ACC. Clemson dropped slightly to No. 17, and the Hurricanes have a slim lead over Auburn at No. 16.
Four-star Miami commits Marquise Lightfoot (EDGE), Ny Carr (WR) and Zaquan Patterson (S) all jumped at least 10 spots to solidify their position as top-60 recruits. Lightfoot climbed from No. 63 to No. 49; Carr climbed from No. 62 to No. 52; and Patterson climbed from No. 68 to No. 58. Four-star tight end commit Elija Lofton is also flirting with the top 300 after coming in at 306.
The Hurricanes’ new standing comes as Miami continues to fight for a second-consecutive top-10 recruiting class, something the program hasn’t finished with in more than a decade. Miami closed with the No. 8 recruiting class a season ago and at one point had the No. 3 class in 2023, but instead of getting a slew of commitments in a short timeframe in 2024, the Hurricanes have continued to see recruits trickle in throughout the year (the most recent being Carr earlier this week), although the bulk came between May and August.
Miami is still hoping to land No. 38 overall prospect and four-star defensive lineman Aydin Breland and No. 35 overall prospect and four-star defensive lineman LJ McCray, both of whom are expected to announce commitments soon. Miami is battling Oregon and Georgia for Breland, who will announce Saturday at 2:30 p.m. EST, and fighting Florida, Florida State and Georgia for McCray, who will announce Oct. 21 at a time to be determined.
The Hurricanes most likely need to land at least one (or preferably both) to have an opportunity to finish with another top-10 recruiting class along with landing a five-star recruit, something Miami currently does not have. Four-star receiver Joshisa Trader remains Miami’s highest-ranked commit in the On3 Industry Ranking but slid eight spots from No. 34 to No. 42.
Miami is also still hoping to flip Five-Star Plus+ targets like receiver Jeremiah Smith (the No. 1 overall prospect) from Ohio State, defensive lineman David Stone from Oklahoma and cornerback Ellis Robinson from Georgia.
