Snap counts, PFF grades from Michigan’s win over Purdue
Michigan Wolverines football embarrassed Purdue in a 41-13 win Saturday night. Here, we break down the snap counts and our takeaways from Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) initial grades (offense and defense only), where a single-game mark of about 64 is considered average.

Quarterback

McCarthy was Michigan’s top-rated offensive player.
The starting signal-caller completed 3 of his 5 passes of 20-plus air yards, accumulating 95 yards. He was a bit off compared to his usual form on the intermediate throws, going 9-of-15 for 157 yards, still averaging 10.5 yards per throw. He was also 8-of-13 on passes between 0-9 air yards.
McCarthy was pressured on 16 of his 41 dropbacks, with that 39-percent rate standing as his second-highest mark of the season, behind a win at Nebraska (41.2 percent). He was sacked 3 times, second only to the Indiana game (4).
Michigan seemed to hold quite a bit of its play book back. The Wolverines only used 4 play-action passes (McCarthy went 3-of-4 for 3 yards) and didn’t use him on any designed runs.

Corum picked up 4 first downs, including 3 touchdowns. He was called for a phantom holding call, the only penalty on the Michigan team. The Wolverines used Corum on 11 gap scheme runs and 4 zone plays. He averaged 2.5 yards after contact per carry.
Edwards averaged only 1.6 yards after contact per carry, and he didn’t pick up a first down on the ground. He did, however, have 3 catches, including a 37-yard gain on a deep ball that set up a touchdown. He was guarded by Purdue linebacker Joey Sumlin.
Mullings had an explosive run for 14 yards.

Morgan had Michigan’s only 15-plus yard run, a 44-yard touchdown dash on a jet sweep and quick handoff from McCarthy. He’s scored touchdowns on 3 of his 14 offensive touches this season.
Wilson had Michigan’s top receiving grade (79.1), with 9 receptions on 10 targets for 143 yards. He had 7 first downs, including 4 that were third-down conversions.
No Wolverine had a contested catch, though there were only 3 attempts for them. Wilson and Johnson each had 1 drop.

Loveland took 16 of his 23 passing snaps out of the slot and only 2 as an in-line tight end.
Barner (81.7) and Loveland (79.4) graded out as Michigan’s top two run blockers. Nobody else on the U-M offense even hit a 67 run-blocking rating.
Barner was charged with dropping 1 pass.

Keegan (88.3) was the Wolverines’ best pass protector, followed by Nugent (81.9) and Zinter (77.7). The tackles struggled to protect, meanwhile. Henderson allowed 4 pressures, including a sack, and Barnhart gave up 4 pressures with no sacks. McCarthy was brought down behind the line 3 times, but only the 1 to Henderson was charged to a specific player. Nugent gave up 1 pressure.
Nugent led the Michigan offensive line with a 66.7 run-blocking grade. Zinter (66.0) and Jones (64.3) were relatively close behind. No other lineman was above 60 in that category.
Overall, the Maize and Blue used 19 gap scheme runs and 8 zone rushes.

Graham had Michigan’s third-highest overall grade on defense, with an 85.0 mark in run defense that led the unit. Grant and Jenkins, meanwhile, ranked fourth on the defense with identical 61.0 pass-rush ratings. They each had 2 pressures.

Harrell (4) led Michigan’s edge rushers and ranked second on the team in pressures. Stewart had 2, and Morris and McGregor added 1. Harrell (69.9) and Stewart (69.4) didn’t post gaudy pass-rush grades but led their position group.
McGregor had a 76.5 run-defense grade, which ranked second on the defense. His night was highlighted by a tackle for loss on 3rd and short on which he came screaming off the back side and made the play from behind.
Linebacker

Barrett blitzed early and often, 9 times on passing downs, and he had 5 pressures, meaning he put heat on the quarterback on more than half of his pass-rush snaps. His 92.3 pass-rush grade led the team.
Colson ranked seventh on the Michigan defense with a 70.8 run-defense rating. Meanwhile, Hausmann slotted fourth on the team with a 71.3 coverage grade.

Sainristil was on coverage on Purdue wideout Deion Burks on the team’s only touchdown of the night, with 18 seconds to go. Sainristil was playing outside cornerback at the time. Wallace left the game early with injury.
Will Johnson dominated in coverage, with an 89.7 grade. He was targeted 8 times but gave up just 3 receptions for 23 yards, and he added an interception.
Wallace had the third-best coverage rating on the team, allowing 1 reception for 3 yards on 3 targets.
Waller gave up a 43-yard deep ball when he turned toward the football but didn’t locate it to make a play on it.
Walker and Sainristil each missed a tackle.

Rod Moore was Michigan’s second-best cover man, grading out at 85.0. He wasn’t even targeted in coverage. Moore’s 84.4 overall grade ranked second on the defense, as well.
Paige led Michigan with 8 tackles and graded out as the fifth-best run stopped on the team (73.8).
