Michigan high on the list for Top 100 CB Dawayne Galloway after weekend visit
The Wolverine has been told that Michigan is high on the list heading into the final stretch of the regular season for Top 100 Columbus (Ohio) Marion-Franklin cornerback Dawayne Galloway, who returned to Ann Arbor last weekend to see the win over Purdue. It was his second time on campus, as he previously participated in a June camp inside Al Glick Field House.
Galloway’s notoriety exploded on the recruiting trail this fall as the Wolverines were the third Power 5 school to enter the mix in late September. Co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale, who’s been constructing a close bond with Galloway, offered the junior and continues to lead the charge to pry him from other schools making concerted efforts.
Clinkscale is working to bring Galloway back to Michigan for the game against Ohio State, which is expected to have dozens of commits and targets sitting front row behind the home bench. Galloway told The Wolverine the plan would be to connect with Clinkscale again in person in two weeks, which is enormous for Michigan because intense competition for his services derives from Penn State, Purdue and Georgia.
Giving Galloway a chance to see Michigan play the school that’s less than a 20-minute drive from Marion-Franklin will be important. The fact that the Buckeyes have yet to extend an offer means there’s a prime opportunity for Clinkscale to widen the gap and potentially pluck away another marquee Ohioan prospect.
Galloway, who’s also high on the board for the two-time defending national champions, will be in Athens for the first time this weekend to see a Bulldogs game. On October 14, he was in West Lafayette, where his older cousin, 2024 tight end Tayvion Galloway is verbally committed. Ohio State hosted Galloway on October 7.
According to a source closely tied to Galloway, Michigan is within the Top 5 among the schools reaching out the most to On3’s No. 3 ranked prospect in Ohio and No. 11 cornerback nationally. Allowing Galloway to soak in the overall experience of a night game after a quick behind-the-scenes look six months ago was an essential next step that the Wolverines needed to take to stand out on an offer sheet that also includes Texas A&M, Auburn, Tennessee, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
Galloway said that the fans helped make last weekend’s experience more memorable. There’s something to behold about walking out of the tunnel for the first time with spectators filling the stands, as Galloway and four other Ohio prospects stood next to the student section throughout warmups. Galloway also really enjoyed the light show that was shown when the Michigan players touched the banner and in the second half.
Galloway reports a 4.3 40-yard dash and 10.42 100-meter dash, so his speed helped get him on Michigan’s radar at the June camp and what earned him an offer from Clinkscale two months ago. At 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, Galloway has the size and hustle that mirrors the physical embodiment of most cornerbacks on U-M’s roster. Galloway spent most of the game watching Clinkscale’s unit, like Will Johnson and Josh Nichols and was impressed with how much of an impact they make on the defense.
It’s likely that Galloway will wait until the spring and early summer to begin formalizing a commitment, which will happen after official visits are underway. He’ll continue taking winter and early spring trips, too, with Michigan in line to welcome him back. With game-day visits riddled with so many targets, allowing Galloway to sit down individually with Clinkscale and head coach Jim Harbaugh on a Junior Day visit in January or spring camp practice for a prolonged period will be ideal.
Another avenue Michigan should undergo with enticing Galloway is having him sit down with Cameron Calhoun and DJ Waller, two cornerbacks who are fellow Ohio natives. Their relationship with Clinkscale during the recruiting process was a big reason why their committed to the Wolverines late in the 2023 cycle, so sharing their experiences with Galloways and pitching Clinkscale’s teaching philosophies could make a difference.
